Classes Start Today!

Today marks the start of eight weeks of classes.  I am enrolled in Beginning Chinese and Contemporary Chinese Culture and Society (in English).  Yesterday, I met my Chinese teacher and had lunch with her, and she seems like she will be a very good teacher.  All of the language instructors are around our age as well.  Right now, I am scheduled to have Chinese Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday for three hours each morning.  My other class meets Tuesday and Thursday afternoon for three hours.  Luckily I have a break on Wednesday.  In other news, I woke up this morning and discovered that sunlight actually exists in Shanghai!  Today, for the first time, it will only rain intermittently instead of for the whole day.  This is very exciting as umbrellas and soaking wet shoes were getting old.  Maybe my clothes will actually get completely dry as well (Sidenote: Dryers are rare in China.  There is one for our whole building, but the cost is per every 5 minutes).  Yesterday, I also discovered that fried rice also exists here.  It was very similar to the fried rice served in the US, except there were no peas and it looked somewhat healthier.  The restaurant that has it is my new favorite (They also have homemade noodles, a menu in English, and no smoking).  Hopefully  my one-on-one Chinese classes will go well and not be too exhausting!  They might change my class from 3 to 2 hours a day if it is too much.  Thanks for reading!

  1. Kate, your Dad gave me your blog address. Remarkable that he now has email!
You are probably sleeping now. It is in the afternoon. Your rain has moved to Indy - thunderstorms all morning.
Your posts are very interesting. If you get a chance, try the barbeque pork buns - yummy. They usually have a red stamp on top. They are light dough filled with pork.
In CA, there is a Target store with cart ramps as well. The cart rides to the next floor while you have to walk up the flight of steps!
Your pictures are great. Looking forward to following your progress.
